In 1950, Malcolm started signing his name “Malcolm X,” after sending a letter to President Truman expressing his opposition to the Korean War. After escaping World War II military service by faking mental insanity, Malcolm was arrested in 1946 after picking up a stolen watch he had left for repair at a shop.ĭuring his time in prison, he developed an appetite for reading, and it was at this time that he discovered Islam. He worked various odd jobs up to the age of 21 and eventually moved to Harlem in New York City in 1943. He dropped out of high school at 14, despite excelling, after a white teacher told him that practicing law was not a realistic goal for someone of his skin color. Malcolm attended West Junior High School in Lansing and Mason High School in Mason, Michigan, but left before graduating. He was one of seven children and relocated to Milwaukee and finally Lansing, Michigan, after Klu Klux Klan threats.Īt the age of 6, Malcolm’s father died after a streetcar hit him, but historians agree that white racists were responsible. Malcolm X was born on May 19th, 1925, as Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska. He is known for his pursuit of racial justice, and along with Martin Luther King Jr., he is the defining figure of the Civil Rights Movement. How are we removing thousands of guns off the street and they still find a way into New York City in the hands of people who are killers?" Adams said.Malcolm X is one of the most celebrated figures in black history. "Let me be clear, there are no gun manufacturers in New York City. Mayor Adams, who was a former police officer, said at the Harlem hospital where the officers were taken last week: "it is our city against the killers." "We have four times this month rushed to the scene of NYPD officers shot by violent criminals in possession of deadly, illegal guns," Sewell said. She also noted that she is "full of rage and anger, hurt and sad, torn." Luzuriaga said that she has been living a "nightmare" since she lost her husband Rivera. "All of this seems so unreal like I'm having one of those nightmares that you never thought you'd have." "I can't believe I'm standing in front of thousands of people in a cathedral we planned to visit later this year," the widow of the slain New York officer said, according to CNN. And this is visible in the story, as the Overmind claims Kerrigan is a key to the Zerg victory yet nothing in the campaign really indicates this is the case. Blizzard wanted a human viewpoint for the Zerg campaign. Kerrigan is a creation of the first point actually. Starcraft 2 has motiveless wars fought for unclear reasons, and there's a random space-god. Starcraft story is one where humans end up in a middle of an ancient and epic scale conflict. I'm still waiting for the true SCII's story. Well, Amon and the Hybrids actually were the real enemies in the overall plot, but only in Legacy of the Void they got that treatment. Brood War set of events made clear that Kerrigan and the Hybrids bred by Duran were the enemies in SCII, not Mengsk. He was the enemy in both Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm. But Blizzard treat him like the foe to be dealt with. What annoyed me is how much importance Mengsk got in SCII's plot, after how bad his ass got kicked in Brood War. Samir Duran, one the most mischievous characters from Brood War, and one of the biggest prospects plots for SCII's story barely had any appearence in the final run, and when it did, barely ressembled the Brood War personality at all. How they managed to ruin Kerrigan character is simply unbelievable. Can't believe how bad Blizzard managed to fuck up the way they did. Playing Starcraft Brood War campaign again makes me sad about how bad, cheesy and embarassing SCII's story was. Parsons was particularly interested in the role of norms and values. Parsons also thought that social systems had a number of functional prerequisites, such as compatibility with other systems, fulfillment of the needs of actors, support from other systems, inducing adequate levels of participation from its members, controlling deviance, controlling conflict, and language. Parsons's interest was in the large-scale components of social systems, such as collectivities, norms, and values. Actors are seen as a collection of statuses and roles relatively devoid of thought. The basic unit of Parsons's social system is the status-role complex. These assumptions led him to focus primarily on order but to overlook, for the most part, the issue of change. Parsons was concerned primarily with the creation of social order, and he investigated it using his theory based on a number of assumptions, primarily that systems are interdependent they tend towards equilibrium they may be either static or involved in change that allocation and integration are particularly important to systems in any particular point of equilibrium and that systems are self-maintaining. He saw these levels hierarchically, with each of the lower levels providing the impetus for the higher levels, with the higher levels controlling the lower levels. Parsons saw these action systems acting at different levels of analysis, starting with the behavioral organism and building to the cultural system. Latency, or pattern maintenance function, i.e., how motivation and the dimensions of culture that create and sustain motivation are stimulated.Ĭomplementing this are four action systems, each of which serve a functional imperative: the behavioral organism performs the adaptive function the personality system performs goal attainment the social system performs the integrative function and the cultural system performs pattern maintenance. The integrative function, or the regulation of the components of the system.Ĥ. The goal-attainment function, i.e., how a system defines and achieves its goals.ģ. The adaptive function, whereby a system adapts to its environment.Ģ. The heart of Parsons's theory is built on the four functional imperatives, also known as the AGIL system:ġ. The single greatest contributor, and practitioner, of structural functionalism was Talcott Parsons (1902-1979). Much like other versions of structural functionalism, this theory is criticized as conservative and lacking in empirical support. Since some positions are more important, more pleasant, and require different skills, a system of stratification is necessary to make sure all roles are fulfilled. Stratification here refers to positions rather than individuals and to the way that individuals are placed in the appropriate position. This theory argued that stratification was universal and necessary for society, and that it was therefore functional. One of the earliest and better known applications of structural functionalism was the functional theory of stratification. Emerging as an offshoot of organicism, structural functionalists were mainly societal functionalists who were interested in large-scale social structures and institutions within society, how they interrelate, and their constraining effects on actors. Conflict theories, instead, see control and coercion between dominants and subordinates as animating forces in society.Īlthough popular, even dominant, after World War II, structural functionalism is today generally of only historical interest. Functionalism and neofunctionalism can both be thought of as consensus theories, focusing on the relationships between such things as shared norms and values and the creation of social order. This chapter deals with the rise and fall of structural functionalism, neofunctionalism, and conflict theory. Structural Functionalism, Neofunctionalism, and Conflict Theory Globally, approximately 36 million people were living with dementia as of 2010, with prevalence showing a tendency to double every 20 years thus, 66 million people are expected to present the disease by 2030, and 115 million by 2050. The worldwide increases in life expectancy and population ageing entail new challenges in ensuring quality of life and individual well-being. We present normative data for the MoCA test in the Chilean population, and propose cut-off points for different age ranges to discriminate normal cognitive performance from neurocognitive disorders results are adjusted for education level. We propose a protocol for evaluating results by percentiles and scores for different age ranges, and an individual normalised scalar score. Older adults with less formal education presented poorer results and lower cognitive performance. The mean (standard deviation) score for the total sample was 24.04 (3.22), whereas the normal range originally defined for the instrument is 26-30 points. Age, education, and sex account for 1%-7% of variance. ResultsĪge and education level had a significant impact on general cognitive performance, as determined by MoCA score. We analysed the effects of age, education level, and sex on MoCA performance. We performed a descriptive, correlational validation study of the MoCA test, using a sample including 526 healthy individuals of both sexes, aged between 18 and 90 years, from the north, centre, and south of Chile. This study aims to normalise and standardise the MoCA test for the Chilean population. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a short, simple, valid, and reliable screening test, assesses general cognitive status, and is useful in public health contexts. Population ageing poses a challenge for countries in preventing and detecting neurodegenerative disorders. Mood boards are a good way to experiment with a color palette, fonts, and style as well as plan the visual hierarchy of a project. Mood board compiled by Tubik designer Ernest Asanov How to create a mood board? This way designers can effectively share their ideas with others because visual material always works better than fluent phrases. Boards can be easily created within a tight time frame and turn an abstract idea into a real one. Mood boards are a useful tool for helping designers effectively collaborate with clients and team members. They are meant to transfer the right mood and bring the emotions expected from a product. Unlike wireframes and prototypes, mood boards don’t show a detailed picture of a future project. Mood boards are literally boards (digital or material) which people filled with different kinds of things from photos to various textures so that they could visualize ideas and concepts. The technique of mood boarding is popular not only in the design field but among many creative professionals. Let’s see what mood boards are and how they can help in the designer’s workflow. Today’s article is devoted to a technique called mood boarding. However, there are several methods helping to reduce risks of clients’ rejects as well as save designers’ time and nerves. Probably right now everyone expects some relevant advice on how to avoid this kind of situation but truly saying there is no perfect decision. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Every designer at least once has been through such an unpleasant situation. Just imagine you worked hard, spent plenty of time creating a detailed prototype, and then a client rejected it saying that it isn’t even close to what he wanted. Now, before I jump in, I want to acknowledge that everyone has their own individual nutrient needs. Enter Meal Templates (aka Lazy Meal Planning) I much prefer to follow a loose meal template than a strict meal plan (which I lovingly refer to as “lazy meal planning”). This is why lazy meal planning is my M.O. It’s just that most of ‘em aren’t some polished, pre-planned, cooked-all-on-Sunday sort of thing. Now, this doesn’t mean all of my meals are completely UNplanned. People are shocked to hear that I’m both a dietitian and a non-meal planner. OR, hubby and toddler will scarf down more food than expected and I’ll have NO leftovers, in which case a plan that accounts for leftovers will also be screwed up.Īm I the only person who feels this way?! Is there a Failed Meal Planners Anonymous group I’m supposed to join? I will likely have leftovers and then leftovers will become another meal and then the whole “plan” will get screwed up.I probably won’t want what the meal plan says I’m supposed to eat (I can’t force myself to eat salad when my body wants chili.).Since I eat in-season (and since that varies regionally), unless the meal plan comes with my farm box for the week, I won’t have the ingredients for all those recipes.I almost never follow recipes to a “T.”. No matter how good the combinations sound, the rebel in me knows that: I look at a weekly meal plan that is supposed to make my life “easier” and I already feel like a failure because I know there’s no way I’m actually going to eat exactly that. I hear the word meal plan and my brain turns to jelly. |
